Officials unveil$20 million “Gateway to the Northwest”
City, Cheltenham, SEPTA partnership will redevelop streetscape,transit station and mall
PHILADELPHIA – Ogontz AvenueRevitalization Corp. (OARC), Philadelphia’sleading community development corporation, along with state, city andCheltenham Township officials on April 7th unveiled a$20 million project to transform upper Ogontz Avenue into Philadelphia’s “Gateway tothe Northwest.”
Officialsoutlined three redevelopment plans – a new Ogontz Avenue streetscape from Middleton Street to80th Street, a redesigned SEPTA bus loop, additions to theCheltenham Mall and an expanded ShopRite, making it one of the largestsupermarkets in Pennsylvania.
The redevelopmentprojects reflect a “new and collaborative vision of Ogontz Avenue as a thriving,beautified commercial corridor leading to extensive retail shopping and businessservices as well as mass transit connections where everybody feels welcome”,said Jack Kitchen, President and CEO of OARC. The projects are expected tocreate more 400 permanent and temporary jobs.
The announcementcame at a news conference held at the intersections of Cheltenham and Ogontz Avenues, near a nuisance bar andshuttered check-cashing outlet that will be turned into office space withadjacent off-street parking.
